Known as the adventure capital of the world, Queenstown is a place where stunning natural landscapes meet thrilling activities. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, an adrenaline junkie, or simply looking for a relaxing getaway, Queenstown offers something for everyone.

First Impressions of Queenstown

Nestled on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and surrounded by the majestic Southern Alps, Queenstown’s beauty is awe-inspiring from the moment you arrive. The town has a vibrant, yet laid-back vibe, with its picturesque streets lined with cozy cafes, boutique shops, and lively bars. Despite its small size, Queenstown buzzes with energy and excitement, making it an ideal destination for both adventure and relaxation.

The People of Queenstown

Kiwis, as New Zealanders are affectionately known, are some of the friendliest and most welcoming people you’ll ever meet. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with warm smiles and helpful advice. The locals in Queenstown take pride in their town and are eager to share its treasures with visitors. Their laid-back, friendly demeanor made us feel at home instantly.

Exploring the Town

Our first day in Queenstown was spent exploring the charming town center. We wandered through the quaint streets, stopping at local shops and cafes. One of our favorite spots was the Fergburger, a legendary burger joint known for its delicious, massive burgers. The line was long, but it was well worth the wait.

Adventure Awaits

Queenstown is synonymous with adventure, and we were eager to experience some of the thrilling activities it offers. Our first adventure was a ride on the Shotover Jet, an exhilarating jet boat ride through the narrow canyons of the Shotover River. The adrenaline rush was incredible as we sped through the twists and turns, narrowly missing the canyon walls.

Next, we took the Skyline Gondola to Bob’s Peak, which offers panoramic views of Queenstown and the surrounding mountains. At the top, we decided to try the Luge, a fun-filled gravity ride down a winding track. The combination of stunning views and thrilling descent made it an unforgettable experience.

Milford Sound Day Trip

No trip to Queenstown is complete without a visit to Milford Sound, often described as the “eighth wonder of the world.” We booked a day trip with RealNZ, which included a scenic drive through Fiordland National Park and a cruise on the fjord. The dramatic cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and lush rainforests made for an awe-inspiring experience. Despite the rainy weather, the mist and fog added a mystical charm to the landscape.

Wine Tasting in Gibbston Valley

For a more relaxed day, we visited the nearby Gibbston Valley, known for its world-class wineries. We took a tour of the Gibbston Valley Winery, where we sampled some of the region’s finest Pinot Noirs and enjoyed a delicious lunch at the winery’s restaurant. The scenic vineyards set against the backdrop of the rugged mountains made for a perfect day of indulgence and relaxation.

Hiking and Nature Walks

Queenstown is a paradise for hikers and nature lovers. We embarked on the Ben Lomond Track, a challenging but rewarding hike that offers stunning views of Lake Wakatipu and the surrounding peaks. The trail took us through diverse landscapes, from lush forests to alpine meadows, and the panoramic views from the summit were simply breathtaking.

Accommodation in Queenstown

We stayed at the Eichardt’s Private Hotel, a luxurious boutique hotel located in the heart of Queenstown. The hotel combines elegance with comfort, offering stunning views of Lake Wakatipu. The attentive staff, beautifully decorated rooms, and delicious breakfasts made our stay truly special.
